Nicolas Altstaedt – Star on the rise.

Nicolas Altstaedt, Cello – José Gallardo, Piano – Recital in Madrid – April 19, 2017 – RNE Radio Clasica –

Cello recitals this week. A concert featuring French-German virtuoso cellist Nicolas Altstaedt accompanied by José Gallardo at the piano in a program of music by Ginastera, Villa-Lobos, Manuel de Fall and Astor Piazzola.

Altstaedt has been making waves since his 2010 Young Artist Award from Credit Suisse for his electric performance of the Schumann Cello concerto with the Vienna Philharmonic under Gustavo Dudamel. Since then, he has performed worldwide with some of the most prestigious orchestras as well as solo performances in every major concert hall. He has premiered numerous new works and has been associated with a number of chamber ensembles. Recently, he was recipient of the BBC Music Magazine Cello Award for 2017 and later on this year he will be embarking on an extensive tour of Australia.

This concert, recorded in April of this year features a nicely put-together group of familiar and unfamiliar works. Here’s what’s on the program:

1.GINASTERA: Pampeana nº 2, Op. 21.
2.VILLA LOBOS: Ária (Cantinela), de Bachianas brasileiras nº 5.
3.GINASTERA: Sonata para violonchelo y piano, Op. 49.
4.VILLA LOBOS: O trenzinho do Caipira, de Bachianas brasileiras nº 2.
5.FALLA: Suite popular española (arr. para violonchelo y piano de Maurice Marechal).
6.GINASTERA: Puneña nº 2, Op. 45 “Homenaje a Paul Sacher”, para violonchelo solo.
7.PIAZZOLLA: Le grand tango.

As an artist known for his creativity and versatility, this concert offers ample proof of Altstaedt’s engaging and adventuresome style.

I would definitely put this in the category of Anti-Road Rage Wednesday concerts – something that makes a nice departure from the standard fare, and offers proof there’s a lot of music out there to discover, and thanks to artists like Nicolas Altstaedt and many others from this recent crop of musical talents, who keep it all fresh and vital, and that’s something the world of Classical Music desperately needs in order to survive.

Tune out the world and enjoy.
